- Photographed holding James Earl Carter IV ; also in Digital Library with Amy Carter as Mary Prince. Fitzpatrick was her married name until formally separated in 1979. She began serving the Carters when she was assigned to the Governor's Mansion as part of her prison sentence; though innocent, she had plead guilty for murder at the urging of her court-appointed attoney. First Lady Rosalynn Carter became interested in her case and advocated for criminal justice reform and for Mary to join the family at the White House. After serving her sentence for more than 6 years, her conviction was overturned in 1977.
