- Information about James Andre’s life outside of the President’s House remains unknown. James appears four times in records related to George Washington’s presidential household in Philadelphia. His role in the household is unclear and his wages varied each time he appears in the records. He first appears in August 1794, earning $8.00 for a month's wages. However, the second time he appears in May 1795, he earns $11.00 for a month, but the following month he earns $9.00. His final entry from February 1796 shows him earning $10.00. It is unusual to see someone earning different wages each time they appear in the record. Given that he is only recorded four times, it is unclear whether he was part of the full-time staff or was hired as needed. 1
