Little information is known about Lewis List’s life outside of the President’s House. However, he does appear in a city census record in 1793, residing in Philadelphia at the Philadelphia Dock Ward.1

Lewis List began working for George Washington at the President’s House in Philadelphia in June 1793. Although his role in the household remains unclear, he earned $7.00 per month.2 Lewis was “discharged” from Washington’s household in September 1790 and was given an extra month’s pay.3
