- On September 5, 1853, about seven months after Franklin Pierce became president, the Evening Star newspaper in Washington, D.C., published an article that mentioned a coachman for the president but did not identify him by name. The article claimed that President Pierce “transferred his former driver to another duty” at the White House and replaced him as coachman with a different worker named Henry.1 The article does not explain what new duty the former coachman performed for Pierce, or how long prior to September he had worked for the president. Unfortunately, little else is known about this individual at this time.
