Biography
Dennis Mitchell was born in Maryland.1 By 1841 he was living in Washington, D.C., working as a gardener at the Capitol grounds. A newspaper article from that year describes Mitchell as a gardener at Capitol Square.2 It cannot be confirmed, but it is likely that Dennis Mitchell worked at the White House as a grounds laborer. He appears on the 1855 registry of federal government employees, listed as a laborer for the public grounds in Washington, D.C., which included the Capitol grounds but also the White House Grounds and Lafayette Park. Mitchell was listed alongside several other laborers who are confirmed to have worked at the White House under head gardener John Watt.3 Little else is known about Mitchell at this time.4
