Biography

David Hagan worked at the White House during James Buchanan’s presidency. He appears in a receipt book listing the names, positions, salaries, and signatures of Executive Mansion employees between 1857 and 1860. In these records, Hagan is listed as “Steward of the Executive Mansion,” a senior role responsible for managing daily operations and services in the president’s home. The records indicate that Hagan began receiving monthly payments on January 1, 1858, and continued in the role through July 2, 1858, earning $100 per month. Little else is known about Hagan and his life at this time.1
