Biography
George Washington worked at the White House in the early 1880s.1 Washington was listed as a servant in a newspaper report identifying staff members who received additional compensation for their work during the nearly three-month period between the shooting of President James A. Garfield and his death in 1881. Little else is known about Washington’s life or service at the White House. Because his name is common, it is difficult to confirm additional details with certainty, so this biography is based only on verified information.2
