Biography

Louis Auguste Cuppinger was born in Colmar, France, on April 28, 1843.1 Sometime before 1875, he immigrated to the United States, became a naturalized citizen, and settled in New York City.2 Prior to joining the White House staff, Cuppinger worked for businessman John Jacob Astor. Although it is unclear how he came to the Executive Mansion, he entered White House service in 1882 as a chef.3 Cuppinger remained at the White House for just over a year before leaving his position in 1883.4

Little is known about his life after his White House service, but available records indicate that he returned to New York City, where he died in 1889. He was buried at Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, New York.5
