Biography
Little is known about Thomas Overall’s life prior to 1889, when an Evening Star article about the White House noted “There are but four men employed at the stables…Thos. Overall made his debut in Washington in company with President [Benjamin] Harrison’s horses.”1 Thomas Overall appears in the 1890 Washington, D.C. directory as a hostler; his duties may have included cleaning the stalls, feeding, brushing, shoeing, saddling, and exercising the horses, tending to equine equipment like saddles and harnesses, and general maintenance of the stables and carriages.2 By 1891, his listed occupation was “laborer” making it difficult to discern if he still worked at the stables. Further information about his life and career is limited.3
