- At this time, all information about H.W. Pate comes from a single known source: he is listed in the 1897 Official Register of Government Employees as a fireman working at the White House under President Willliam McKinley.1 As fireman, Pate was tasked with maintaining the fireplaces and other heating units in the White House. Pate does not appear in government registers prior to or beyond 1897, so it is unclear if he worked at the White House beyond this time.
