- Outside of employment at the White House, there is very little known information about H.L. Ramsey, including his first name. Ramsey was an assistant chauffeur during William Howard Taft’s presidency. President Taft preferred cars to horses, and he began to retire the White House stables to create the first White House garage.1 Ramsey earned $80.00 per month and drove a White steamer along with other vehicles. He left his role prior to December 1910.2
