Charles H. Green was born in Maryland around 1873.¹ He joined the White House staff as a doorman in 1917, welcoming guests at the Executive Mansion and traveling with presidents as needed. According to a 1925 newspaper article, he wore “the White House livery designed by Mrs. Taft– of blue broadcloth, with swallowtail coats and low-cut vests of black and white pin strips with brass buttons” while on the job.² Green remained in the role through his retirement in 1942.³ Further information about his life is scarce.

The spelling “Greene” is used interchangeably in documentation; it is unclear which was more accurate.
