George Allen Pride was born around 1889 in Virginia.1 Prior to working at the White House, Pride worked in Washington, D.C. as a butler and laborer.2
He began working at the White House by 1915 as a butler. According to Washington, D.C. directories, Pride held this position through at least 1917.3 In his free time, Johnson was a member of the Chandelier Club– a social group of African-American White House domestic employees who gathered outside of work.4
By 1922, Pride worked as a clerk at an unnamed business, according to the D.C. city directory.
