- Everett E. Stewart was born in Virginia on October 14, 1889.1 He first joined the White House staff in 1927 as a houseman on the Ground Floor, meaning that he would have cleaned the space, moved furniture and other heavy items, and generally kept the area orderly.2 Stewart was documented in this role through at least 1933, though he may have stayed beyond these years.3 By 1940, census data lists his occupation as a chauffeur for the government printing office.4 Everett died on July 12, 1966.5
