Biography
Robert C. Neal was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania in 1896.1 Neal served in the U.S. Army during World War I, and later moved to Washington, D.C., where he worked as a butler.2 From 1930-1932, Neal was listed in Lou Hoover’s annual White House Christmas List as a pantryman.3 In his free time, Neal was a member of the Chandelier Club– a social group of African-American White House domestic employees who gathered outside of work.4 In 1933, he was listed in city directories as a White House butler, but the following year, documentation placed him at the War Department as a messenger. He continued to work there in the years that followed.5 Further information about his life is scarce.
