- According to a 1929 White House memo, an individual named James Jackson was assigned to the garage from the Washington General Depot; the memo described his background as follows: “He is one of the men previously assigned to the President’s horses in the White House Stables.” (1) This suggests that his tenure predated the 1909 conversion of the stables into a garage, but his exact start date is unknown. However, he was listed on First Lady Lou Hoover’s annual Christmas lists through 1932. (2) During that time, Jackson was on night duty at the garage from midnight to 8 a.m., where he cleaned and washed the White House fleet of automobiles as needed. His name is very common, and as a result, it is difficult to confirm further information about his life or career.
