- Biography
Ann Warner was likely born on November 19, 1767, in Philadelphia. Her maiden name was Roberts and she married a man named William Warner in 1790.1
Warner appears several times in George Washington’s household records at the President’s House in Philadelphia. She was hired for short-term work and first appeared in April 1794 earning $.50 for “a days washing,” suggesting that she assisted with laundry. She appears again the following month with a woman named Eliza Pister. The pair earned $7.00 combined for “work done in the house.” She appears one more time in June, this time earning $3.50 for “7 days work.”2
Ann Warner died on October 16, 1842 and was buried at Merion Friends Burial Ground in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.3
- It is often very difficult to find additional information about women in this period. However, this Ann Warner fits with the correct location and time period to be the same individual working in Washington’s household. Warner is a fairly common last name, so there is a chance this could be a different person. “Ann Roberts Warner,” Find a Grave, accessed November 3, 2025, https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/106779599/ann-warner?_gl=1*i4apfy*_gcl_au*MjcwOTk4MjI4LjE3NTU2OTk5MzA.*_ga*MTM1MjgyOTI1NC4xNzM5ODkyMTE4*_ga_4QT8FMEX30*czhiZTMyZmZiLTI3ZTYtNDFkNS05OWQ2LWMwZGEwN2U4Yzc2NiRvMTI3JGcxJHQxNzYyMTg0Nzc4JGo1MCRsMCRoMA..*_ga_LMK6K2LSJH*czhiZTMyZmZiLTI3ZTYtNDFkNS05OWQ2LWMwZGEwN2U4Yzc2NiRvMTI3JGcxJHQxNzYyMTg0Nzc4JGo0NCRsMCRoMA..#source; “Ann Warner in the U.S. Find a Grave Index, 1600s-Current,” Ancestry, accessed November 3, 2025, https://www.ancestry.com/search/collections/60525/records/65662286?tid=&pid=&queryId=dfdb4762-0c62-4deb-b6ea-91fcf01f0ff8&_phsrc=OuO724&_phstart=successSource.
