- In 1929, an individual named John H. Small was included on Lou Hoover’s annual staff Christmas list among horticulture employees supervised by Head Gardener Charles Henlock. (1) That same year, a man named John H. Small III operated a family florist shop called “John H. Small and Sons” in Washington, D.C. It seems unlikely that an individual could run their own floral business while working at the White House, but further information about this employee is scarce. (2)
