- Sam Marthies Redmiles was born in Richmond, Virginia on September 19, 1907. (1) Redmiles worked as a laborer for the Office of Public Buildings and Parks, and as early as 1929, he was assigned to the White House under the supervision of Head Gardener Charles Henlock. (2) Little else is known at this time about his tenure at the White House, though he worked with the Department of the Interior in the years that followed, making it likely that he was assigned to the Executive Mansion beyond 1929. He may have worked on the White House Grounds or at the White House greenhouses near the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on the National Mall. (3) During World War II, Redmiles served as a private in the U.S. Army. (4) Afterward, he resumed his work with the Department of the Interior. Redmiles died on September 23, 1983, and was buried at Quantico National Cemetery in Virginia. (5)
