- In 1929, an individual named “D. Cole” was included on Lou Hoover’s annual staff Christmas list among horticulture employees supervised by Head Gardener Charles Henlock. They may have worked on the White House Grounds or at the White House greenhouses near the Bureau of Engraving and Printing on the National Mall.(1) City directories from the period suggest this was Daniel W. Cole, a laborer with the Office of Public Buildings and Parks. Further information about Cole’s life, career, and tenure at the White House is limited. (2)
