- Arthur Conan Doyle was born on December 27, 1906, in Washington, D.C. (1) Doyle was a longtime plumber for the U.S. government, and as early as 1930 he was assigned to the White House from the Department of the Interior. (2) He worked at the White House for over two decades, maintaining the plumbing and water systems including fountains, sinks, toilets, and more. (3) Doyle was last documented on a list of employees set to receive salary increases in 1951; he likely worked there beyond that date, but information is limited. (3) Doyle passed away on December 17, 1986, and was buried at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Suitland, Maryland. (4)
