- Auguste Lemuir worked for George Washington as a chef for one month in the spring of 1790 at the second presidential residence in Philadelphia. Washington struggled to find an adequate chef during this time period and the household floundered until a new “satisfactory” chef, John Vicar, finally joined the household in May 1790.1 Auguste Lemuir was identified in Washington’s household records as a “Frenchman,” however additional information about his life remains unknown.2
