- Paul Wesley Marcey Sr. was born on July 18, 1916, in Ballston, Virginia. (1) Marcey worked for the Joe Gibbin Company in Maryland and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. (2) By 1950, he worked as a gardener at the White House; his brother, William E. Marcey, was an engineer on staff and likely helped him attain the position. (3) Marcey remained on staff for decades to come, sometimes listed as a florist in the Bouquet Room, or as a maintenance foreman. (4) He is listed on staff through Richard Nixon’s presidency in 1973, but may have worked there beyond that time as his 1989 death certificate listed his occupation as White House Gardener. (5) Paul W. Marcey Sr. died on July 5, 1989, and was buried at Columbia Gardens Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia. (6)
