- A 1944 staff roster from the White House listed “Sgt. Lloyd E. Armstrong” as the chauffeur to Harry Hopkins, President Franklin D. Roosevelt’s close advisor. (1) Further information about Armstrong’s life is limited, as several men by that name lived in Washington, D.C. at the time. His title suggests that he was assigned to the White House Garage from the U.S. Armed Forces, as was the case with several members of the transportation staff.
