- Lyndon Dwight Atwood was born on December 10, 1916, in Washington, D.C. (1) Prior to World War II, Atwood worked for Capital Transit Co., which managed the bus and streetcar systems in the District of Columbia. (2) In 1942, he enlisted in the U.S. Army to fight during World War II. By 1944, he was listed as a mechanic in the White House Garage on that year’s staff roster. In this role, he maintained the fleet of automobiles used by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and his staff. (3) It is unclear when Atwood departed from the White House. The 1950 Census listed his occupation as automobile mechanic at a car dealer and repair shop in D.C. (4) Further information about his life and career is limited. Atwood died on September 24, 2006, and was buried at Sunland Memorial Park in Sun City, Arizona. (5)
