- Information about Peggy’s life outside of the President’s House is currently unknown. Peggy worked as a housemaid for George Washington at his second presidential residence in New York, although it is unclear when she joined the staff there. A letter from Washington’s secretary Tobias Lear stated that Peggy did not wish to move with the president’s household to Philadelphia when the capital moved in 1790.
