- Martha E. M. Moore was born around 1885 in Washington, D.C. (1) She worked as a charwoman, or maid, for the federal government, and as early as 1944, she was a maid at the White House. (2) She reported to Edward Mannix, foreman of the White House cleaning force. (3) Her duties included cleaning and organizing rooms, caring for textiles and linens, and keeping both public and private areas tidy. She remained on staff through at least 1950, but further details about her life and career are limited. (4)
