- Biography
- Haywood Simpson Newman was born on January 3, 1894, in Virginia. (1) He served in World War I and World War II; during the latter, he had attained the rank of master sergeant and served as a U.S. Army chauffeur. (2) For at least part of his World War II service, he was assigned to the White House Garage, as he appears on the 1944 White House staff roster. (3) Further details about his work there are limited. Outside of his Army career he was an active Free Mason. He passed away on May 26, 1958, and was buried at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia. (4)
