- Information about Martin Kline’s life outside of the President’s House remains unknown. Kline worked for George Washington at the President’s House in Philadelphia. He appeared in household records in March 1795, earning $20.00, which likely combined several months’ wages.1 Although this is the only reference to Martin Kline in household records, there was another individual in Washington’s household named Martin. No last name is given in documentation. This individual was likely indentured and worked as a stable boy. It is possible this is the same individual as Martin Kline. However, the last name indicates that this could be a different individual. In addition, Martin Kline earned a wage, while Martin the stable boy did not.2
