- Vincenzo “Vincent” Pierro was born in Italy around 1873; he moved to the United States in 1906. (1) Pierro worked as a gardener for the U.S. government and in 1932, he was listed as a laborer on the White House Grounds. A man named James Pierro worked at the White House in the years preceding 1932; he was likely related to Vincent in some way. (2) One of Vincent’s tasks was driving the lawnmower on the grounds. (3) In 1936, President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed Executive Order 7380 to exempt Pierro from the compulsory retirement age through 1937. (4) The 1940 Census listed him as retired; further information about his life is limited. (5)
